The Heart

In Science this week we have been learning about the heart and blood. It is really interesting. We read about the different parts of the heart and what blood is made up of. We also learnt about stents and bypasses. Today we carried out an investigation to see if exercise has an effect on our heart rates. We took a count of our pulse after different levels of exercise and compared our results! We learnt that the average pulse at rest is 60-100 beats per minute. We took our pulse sitting, then went outside and did 1 minute of walking, then recorded our pulse, and continued likewise for dancing, jumping and running. For some people we found that running made their heart beat faster, however it was jumping for others! Everyone found that their heart rate increased after exercise and therefore we came to the conclusion that exercise does have an effect on heart rate! This is because when we exercise the body requires more energy and oxygen and so the heart has to beat faster to supply our body cells with oxygen. This was a fun experiment to do!
