Fingerprint Art

Last week we looked at our fingerprints in science and saw how everyone has a unique set of designs. This week for art we used our fingerprints and created the following pictures!

CSI Brierfield

To wind up the topic of ‘Myself’ we decided to look at something that was unique to everyone of us…our fingerprints!! We learnt that even identical twins have different fingerprint patterns! Fingerprints are often used by forensic scientists when they are trying to solve a crime. There are 3 main types of patterns: loops, whorls and arches, and examples can be seen below.

To examine what type of fingerprint we had we followed the following steps:

1. Make a small dark area using a pencil (4B or 5B) on a sheet of white paper.
2. Press and rub your right index finger in the pencil-lead dust.
3. Place the sticky side of a piece of Sellotape on the dusted finger.
4. Take the tape with the fingerprint and tape it to a clean sheet of white paper.
5. Identify which fingerprint you have printed by looking at the different examples.
6. Continue the process until you have all ten fingers printed.

We were also amazed to discover that some of us had different patterns on every finger – for example on one finger there was a whorl, but on another finger there was an arch :O Below you can see some examples of our work!

Autobiography Writing

This week we have been working on different things based on the theme of ‘Myself’.  In English we have been discussing autobiographies and had a go at writing our own.  We are very proud of our finished pieces! We designed a cover page, contents page and four different chapters ranging from ‘My Hobbies’ to ‘My Future’ to ‘People I Admire’.  Here are some examples of our finished products 🙂

Self-Portraits

In Art, we practised sketching and drawing ourselves.  Can you guess who we are?
